Outside The Classroom

Outside The Classroom CEO Brandon Busteed

Outside The Classroom CEO Brandon Busteed came up with the idea for AlcoholEdu while he was a student leader and Young Trustee at Duke University. He consulted with educators, physicians and researchers to develop AlcoholEdu, a two-and-a-half-hour online course now required on more than 400 campuses nationwide.

Positioning and Launching
a Social Enterprise

Aquarius Advisers Principal Dave Copithorne served as chief marketing officer and is currently senior marketing adviser to Outside The Classroom, a venture-capital-funded social enterprise that developed the award-winning AlcoholEdu prevention program for colleges and high schools. Dave helped position the new company for the higher education and secondary education markets, articulating its mission and new online approach to population-level prevention. He helped launch and establish AlcoholEdu as the standard for online alcohol prevention on campuses nationwide.

An integrated marketing program including public relations outreach, word-of-mouth marketing, email engaging directly with customers and prospects, targeted advertising, and other initiatives increased the number and quality of sales leads and shortened the sales cycle. The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, CNN, National Public Radio, The New York Times, and dozens of local newspapers, broadcast outlets, university student dailies and education journals covered the story.

To date, more than a million students have taken the AcoholEdu prevention course. Dave’s small marketing group won the national PR Week award in 2004 for the Best Small Corporate Communications Team in America.
